Smart Charge UK store locations
What Smart Charge is
Smart Charge is Sainsbury's own public EV charging network, predominantly ultra-rapid (150-300kW) charging sited exclusively in Sainsbury's supermarket car parks so drivers can charge while they do their shop - the only UK supermarket network fully owned and operated end-to-end by the supermarket itself rather than leased to a third-party operator.
Price tier: Mid-market
Ownership: Smart Charge is a business unit of Sainsbury's Supermarkets Limited, a subsidiary of the LSE-listed J Sainsbury plc. It is not a separate company and has no franchise model; Sainsbury's owns and operates every site, with Kempower as hardware and software technology partner.
Formats: Charging hubs in Sainsbury's supermarket car parks only, with no retail-park, motorway, workplace or on-street sites. Most sites run 150-300kW ultra-rapid DC chargers; a minority run slower 7-22kW AC destination charging.
Growth: Growing through organic rollout of ultra-rapid hubs across Sainsbury's own existing supermarkets, funded from J Sainsbury plc's group capital investment, with no franchise or acquisition route.
